Class Descriptions

Many of our teachers are certified in Akhanda (holistic) Yoga, and so we aim to provide students and practitioners with access to the variety of techniques available in the yogic repertoires, such as asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), mantra (yogic sound syllables), dharana (visualization), dhyana (meditation), and sutras (yogic aphorisms to reflect on and help you to bring yoga into your daily life off the mat). A variety of these techniques may be used in any given class, and specific techniques may be elaborated on in workshops or special-focus classes, such as our meditation classes.

We offer different levels of physical intensity, as well as different levels of experience.

Gentle/Restorative Yoga

This class is ideal for those who wish or require a slower practice that encourages inner awareness and restoration. It is ideal for a time when you feel low on energy, are working with an injury or simply want to balance other more yang, active practices. Props are used to facilitate passive posture work and deep opening. There will also be a higher proportion of postures done close to the ground.

Beginner Yoga

Are you new to yoga? This class introduces yoga postures (asana), relaxation, yogic breathing (pranayama), and sound (mantra) in a gentle and supportive environment. Key elements of yoga philosophy will be presented to help students better appreciate how yoga works as a whole, and how to take simple yoga tools off the mat and into daily life.

Mindful Intermediate Yoga
(Mantra, Movement and Meditation – M Cubed)

Once students have an understanding of yoga postures a wider range of postures and breathing techniques become available. This class if for students who wish to explore a full range of asana and pranayama techniques, yoga philosophy, mantra and meditation, but through a mindful, moderate flow with more emphasis on nurturing and inner exploration.

Dynamic Hatha Yoga

Once students have an understanding of yoga postures a wider range of postures and breathing techniques become available, and yoga practitioners can challenge themselves physically without compromising the evenness of breath or awareness. This class will explore dynamic breathing techniques, a wide variety of asanas in a flowing sequence with a bit more physical intensity than our Mindful class, but less than a powerful Vinyasa class. Some experience with yoga asana is needed for this level.

Vinyasa Yoga

This class is for intermediate students who want to really use the body in a dynamic way. The postures practiced in this class are often linked through the sun salutation, and are meant develop strength and flexibility, as well as balance and awareness. Students will align movement with breath to bring awareness and a body/mind connection to their workout. An energizing and vibrant class! Be prepared to sweat.

Power Yoga

A vigorous practice focusing on strength and flexibility. If you enjoy an athletic style of yoga class, then this class is for you. This is a “yoga workout” – powerful and energetic. You will burn calories while you tone and strengthen your body.

Pre-Natal Yoga

Pre-Natal Yoga provides a special time for mothers-to-be to connect with their baby and explore their changing bodies through their yoga practice. In this class, moms learn breathing techniques and yoga movements that help to ground the body, mind and emotions. Yoga aids in preparing for childbirth. When using focused breathing while holding yoga postures, one learns to breathe into the stretch. Join other expecting moms in a peaceful class.

Pranayama (Breathwork)

Breathwork is said to be one of the most powerful aspects of the yoga repertoire. Breath is a powerful connector between body and mind, and can be used to harness attention, as well as to import and channel an abundance of oxygen and energy. The side effects are better oxygenation of the brain and other bodily tissues and organs, better focus, upliftment, less stress, and easier time falling asleep. Pranayama is also one of the best pre-cursors to meditation practice. This class will include exploration and practice of various breathing techniques, relaxation to absorb the benefits of the session, and finally a 10-15 minute meditation.

Meditation

Meditation is one of the practices we work towards with our movements of the body, and mindfulness cultivation. It is a practice of quieting the mind and savoring each moment. In this class we will explore a variety of different meditation techniques including mantra, breath awareness, affirmation, visualization, etc. This class is offered as a FREE class on the first Sunday of every month.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga follows a pre-determined set series of postures and is a vigorous yoga practice. Breath and movement is aligned in a dynamic flow of asana. Students will begin the class with a series of Sun Salutations and then move into standing asanas designed to open the body. Be prepared to sweat!

Back Care Yoga

Are you dealing with back pain or injury? This class specifically deals with back pain issues and how through gentle movement and breath work, one is able to bring healing. The teacher will guide you through postures specifically designed to aid in stretching and strengthening the back and the whole body. Instead of isolating one specific area, Back Care Yoga integrates all areas of the body through gentle movements to benefit the whole.
